Flipping more formats – to more places – for more people – in more ways
Founded in 1998, Telestream® specializes in products that simplify the access and exchange of high-quality video and audio over data networks. The company’s software applications, encoding components, and hardware appliances provide content owners, creators, and distributors with fast, efficient digital alternatives to handling, dubbing and shipping tape. Telestream products are used by the world’s leading media and entertainment companies, as well as a growing number of government, education and corporate enterprises.
Telestream believes that it shouldn’t matter what formats, systems, or platforms users are working with. Accessing and exchanging video and audio files across data networks should be easy and transparent. That’s why Telestream offers a complete range of flexible, affordable solutions that seamlessly integrate with legacy systems, as well as with emerging new technologies, to meet users exact workflow requirements.
Company headquarters are located in the “video valley” region of Nevada City, California. With the 2006 acquisition of encoding specialist Popwire, Telestream adds a development center in Stockholm, Sweden. The company is managed and staffed by a team of video, encoding and networking experts. Robust products and reliable customer service have gained Telestream a worldwide reputation as the industry standard for automated, file-based media workflows.
Continuous product innovation
Telestream pioneered high-quality media exchange over IP networks with the introduction of ClipMail Pro in 1999. Since that time, ClipMail has grown into a family of MPEG encoding and delivery appliance products which are used extensively for peer-to-peer exchange of approval- to master-quality media around the world.
Telestream recognized the vital need to provide access to video and audio content in a variety of digital formats as well as the need to seamlessly exchange media between different systems. In 2000 Telestream launched its first enterprise-class software product, FlipFactory®, to automate transcoding and delivery of streaming media files. Next, FlipFactory Pro was released. Dubbed the universal format translator, this product expanded FlipFactory capabilities to enable media exchange between virtually all broadcast servers, edit systems, SANs, asset management systems and other professional video systems.
As more and more content was being delivered to broadcasters as files, rather than tape feeds, Telestream expanded its FlipFactory family to automate specific broadcast workflows. FlipFactory TrafficManager, co-developed by ABC Television Network in 2002, automates the ingest of TV commercials and redistribution within broadcast facilities. FlipFactory NewsManager automates the ingest of news content to newsroom systems. FlipFactory HD automates SD-to-HD and HD-to-HD conversions. Telestream’s latest workflow automation solutions, GraphicsFactory and FlipFactory Mobile, released in 2006, address the growing need to brand and repurpose content for today’s “media everywhere” distribution channels.
Personal Productivity Tools for the Mac
In late 2004 Telestream extended the power of its transcoding and workflow automation expertise to the Apple universe. Flip4Mac WMV Components for QuickTime have revolutionized the way Mac users import, export, and play Windows Media. When Microsoft began distribution of Flip4Mac Windows Media Components for QuickTime in January 2006, the number of users quickly grew into the millions.
Flip4Mac Components for Final Cut Pro provide file transfer of MXF and other media files from disc-based cameras and servers into Final Cut Pro systems for editing. Solutions include Import Components for Sony XDCAM, Ikegami Editcam and Grass Valley Infinity disc-based cameras. Import/Export Components for Grass Valley Profile|K2 servers provide file transfer between Grass Valley servers and Final Cut Pro systems.
Telestream’s media delivery solutions expanded in 2005 to include Launch™, a personal IP media delivery application for Mac and Windows-based video editing systems. Launch provides a robust yet affordable means for news or other video journalists to conveniently transmit stories to the station from remote laptops over any IP network, including wireless connections.
With the 2006 acquisition of compression specialist Popwire, Telestream further expands its encoding expertise and product offerings. Episode Series are the first products to emerge from the acquisition. This family of powerful media encoding applications for the Mac is comprised of scalable desktop and server-based solutions that provide ultimate quality with extensive codec settings and filters and ultra fast encoding. These products are ideal for content repurposing for new media channels, including Web, DVD, iPod, portable devices, IPTV, VOD and pro mobile.
Distributed Media Access and Organization
Telestream’s Media Application Platform (MAP) provides Telestream, as well as third-party developers, an open platform for creating innovative workflow applications that enable users to conveniently access, organize, search, view and share digital media across the network.
MAPreview allows users to capture, organize and view multiple live video feeds from the convenience of their desktops. This product is useful for compliance logging, session capture and analysis. MAP Media Access for SharePoint is a media organizer that integrates with Microsoft’s SharePoint workgroup collaboration solution to enable content creators, corporate communications, training, and other users to easily access, share, and collaborate on rich media files (video, audio, and graphics) along with documents across local and wide area networks.
Seamless Technology Integration with our Partners
Since Telestream specializes in connecting incompatible systems, it’s critical for the company to work closely with many partners. Telestream is the most broadly integrated media workflow company in the industry. Dozens of partners have integrated FlipFactory into their asset management solutions and workflows. Many broadcast server manufacturers, edit system vendors and asset management companies rely on Telestream to do the heavy lifting of media reformatting, indexing, and metadata exchange in customer workflows. Telestream MAP solutions are built on Microsoft’s .NET architecture, supporting Web services and Microsoft’s Connected Services Framework to enable easy connectivity with third parties and customer-developed applications.
Market focus
Now favored by all links in the media and entertainment supply chain, from content creators to broadcast and cable outlets, Telestream products have set the standard for automated encoding and delivery of high-quality media. Today, a growing number of companies supplying and servicing much larger markets including ad agencies, corporations, healthcare providers and educational facilities, as well as Apple prosumers, are turning to Telestream for automated digital media workflow automation solutions.
