Drive-in Frequently Asked Questions

Why have Drive-in sales been suspended?

Telestream has decided to suspend further distribution of the Drive-in software pending its evaluation of the recent decision of the U.S. District Court in Real Networks, Inc. v. DVD Copy Control Association, Inc. We are taking this step as a precautionary measure, and will continue to monitor the situation. We will keep you posted on any further developments.

What is Drive-in?

Drive-in allows you to store your DVDs on your computer, so that you can play them at a later date without actually having the DVDs with you.

Is Drive-in legal?

Under license by the DVD CCA and DVD FLLC, Drive-in creates an image that is an exact duplicate of the information that is on the owner’s original DVD disc, thus preserving original content protection. In addition, Drive-in locks the software to the owner’s computer and locks the images to the software. Drive-in allows users to play movie images on computers that they own, but it does not allow users to share their images with others.

Does Drive-in support MacOS X?

No, Apple TV only plays commercial DVD's that are purchased through the iTunes store.

When attempting to image any DVD, I receive an error "Unable to create the DVD image, Can't allocate the required disk space." Why?

You are probably using an older Hard Drive File System, such as FAT32, the MS-DOS filing system. Currently, most DVDs are 4-8GB in size, meaning you must have a file system that can handle these large file sizes. We recommend that you use a newer file system, such as HFS+ or NTFS, on the hard drive you are imaging to, in order to achieve the results you desire.

When attempting to image any DVD, I receive an error "Can't Preserve CSS Protection" or "The DVD drive in this computer has not been set to a specific region".

The first time you play a DVD in your drive, the system sets the region code. If this has not been done, you will receive an error. Playing a DVD in the drive should correct the issue.

Can I share images with my friends once I've made them?

No. Drive-in only allows you to use DVD images that you made.

Can I move a DVD image from one of my computers to another?

Yes, as long as each of your licensed versions of Drive-in is registered with the same DVD Password.

How do I play back images that were created with the beta version of Drive-In?

Once you update to the released version, you can continue to play back images that were created using the beta version. However, you will not be able to image any new images until a license of Drive-in is purchased.

How do I search for the movies once they are on my system?

You can use the Finder to browse through all of your DVD images, or you can use Spotlight to search for DVD images by title, actors, directors, studio, release date, or reviews.

How can I access my movies from Apple's Front Row?

First, eject all other DVDs and DVD images. Then use the Drive-In application to insert your DVD image. When Front Row is invoked, it will use that DVD image.

Can I change the information about my DVD that I received from Amazon?

Yes. Clicking on the Edit Info button in the toolbar will allow you to edit the information.

Can I adjust the cover art, or supply my own?

Yes. Select "Change Cover Art..." from the "Edit" menu to pick a new image, crop the image, or to take a picture using your iSight.

Submit a support request at: http://www.telestream.net/support/request.htm.

After updating, I received an error “Drive-In kernel extension not installed.” What can I do to fix this?

Make sure that you have no anti-virus programs running. iAntiVirus in particular has been known to interfere with our installer. If you have an anti-virus program on your computer, turn it off, throw away the Drive-In application, and reinstall. After Drive-In is installed, you can reactivate your anti-virus program.
