      • "The application attempted to use an unsupported feature"

At this time, Flip4Mac is unable to support this file type because it is DRM (Digital Rights Management) protected.

Currently, Microsoft only makes Windows Media DRM technology available for Windows operating systems. In our previous discussions with Microsoft, they indicated that they had no plans to offer Windows Media DRM support on the Macintosh. We are hoping that they will will be able to change this policy in the future.

        Services that use DRM

        OverDrive Media (.odm) AudioBooks

The Mac version of OverDrive Media Console allows for the download of titles in the OverDrive MP3 Audiobook format.

The Windows Media content (OverDrive WMA Audiobooks, WMA Music, and WMV Video) that OverDrive offers cannot be played on a Macintosh computer due to the DRM used to protect the files.

When selecting content from your library's digital media site, be sure to select the appropriate file format (MP3) so that they can playback on the Mac. Additionally, you may contact your library to request that they purchase more MP3 content to make available for your use.

      • "The operation couldn't be completed. The file is not a movie file. (-19160)/(-2048)"

This error indicates a problem with the file itself. You can verify this assessment by attempting to play the file in other players.

We recommend that you go back to the source of your file to receive another copy. You should check this source file to make sure that it does not present the same error.

*To confirm Flip4mac is fully installed and working properly, please try to play the WMV test file "TEST_WMV9.wmv", or for WMV Streams, please test this website: http://wdmp-1.vo.llnwd.net/d1/wdsmp/TheLoneRanger/Trailer6/TheLoneRanger_TRAILER_Trailer6_High.wmv

There is a workaround to play the windows media stream in Flip Player, instead of within the web browsers.

        Please try the following:

        • Close all web brower applications (Safari, Firefox, Chrome).
        • Select System Preferences (under the Apple menu) and click the Flip4Mac icon, then click the Upgrade tab.
        • Select Browser tab > Check "Launch Flip Player".
      • "The operation couldn't be completed. OSStatus error -12421 or -19000 error"

This error will appear when playing back a file that is DRM (Digital Rights Management) protected or requires a license. Unfortunately, Flip4Mac cannot play this file type.

Currently, Microsoft only makes Windows Media DRM technology available for Windows operating systems and other device platforms. In our previous discussions with Microsoft, they indicated that they had no plans to offer Windows Media DRM support on the Macintosh. We're hoping that they will will be able to change this policy.

Flip4Mac supports standard Windows Media files and many more. Please see our Tech Specs page for all the supported codecs.

      • Is Flip4Mac a free player?

There is no longer a "Free" version of Flip4Mac. Telestream developed the Flip4Mac Windows Media Components to allow Mac users to seamlessly play Microsoft Windows Media content in QuickTime and through their web browsers.

Until recently Microsoft provided the Flip4Mac Player to users for free. As of May 1, 2014, Microsoft has discontinued this free distribution. Telestream will continue to make Flip4Mac Player available, however, a nominal fee will be charged to cover development and support costs as well as the intellectual property fees associated with distributing the product.

For playback of Windows media, you can purchase Flip4Mac Player for only $9.99.

    • I get no video and/or audio during playback.

The most common cause of missing video or audio on playback is an unsupported Windows Media codec

You will need a media inspector application to identify the codec information within your file. Please download and install iMediaHUD which will tell you what codec your .wmv files contains. Look for "Format Codec ID." If the codec from your file matches any of the following codecs listed below, Flip4Mac is unable to support playback or conversion for your specific Windows Media file:

      • Windows Media Video Screen (MSS1, MSS2)
      • Windows Media Video Image (WMVP, WMVP2)
      • Windows Media Audio Voice
      • Direct Show AC3 Filter
      • GoToMeeting (G2M4)
      • GoToWebinar

Note: Videos created using Microsoft PhotoStory are encoded using the Image codec.

    • Can Flip4Mac playback .avi files?

Flip4Mac can playback WMV media wrapped in AVI file format. If you are unable to playback an avi file with Flip4Mac, please download our FREE Switch Player that may allow playback for your file format.

If you continue to have difficulty, please see our 3rd Party Resources.

    • How to play Windows Media files in PowerPoint or Keynote

After installing and activating Flip4Mac, please restart your computer since Flip4Mac is a plugin and will not be recognized if PowerPoint/Keynote were open at the time. Relaunch PowerPoint /Keynote and your windows media files should work fine.
